Careful Targeting Gets Best Results
The more accurate and targeted your direct marketing mailing list, the more successful your direct marketing campaign will be. Your first order of business is to know as much as possible about who you want to reach. Then you can choose the list that best matches your potential customer.
First, it helps to know a bit of Mailing List lingo (and remember, we’re always available to answer any questions you may have). The following terms are ones you may hear as you begin to consider your direct mail campaign:
- List selection: You’ll target your list by selecting the criteria you’re looking for in a customer: age, gender, income, etc.
- Counts: the number of addresses your selections generate
- Compiled List: A list compiled by sources outside your business such as court records, phone books or other directories.
- Specialty List: A list compiled by lists provided through brokers; can contain more specific information such as memberships, subscriptions, etc.
- Consumer List: A list of consumers compiled on the basis of things like geography, age, income, home ownership, etc.
- Business List: A list of businesses compiled on the basis of things like geography, number of employment, business type, etc.
- Occupant List: Selects all addresses on the basis of geography.
- House List: A list of your customers.
- One-time Use: Allows you to use the list one time only.
- List Cleaning: Correcting or removing names that are no longer correct.
- Merge-purge: Merging, or combining, lists and then eliminating any addresses that are duplicates.
